From the House

There is only ever
one of each thing
here

The shop was never really the point. Objects come through, they leave, and what stays is the address: the rooms, the route we drive to fill them, the habit of looking at a thing closely enough to bring it home.

So once a month, this. What came in, where it came from, what it was for.

Some of it you can take home from the page. Some of it is already gone, which is its own kind of information.

Nothing here is being recommended. It is being shown.

Anemones, painted on a lid, by somebody who is not signing it.

Bunny in Sèvres Blue Cachepot1

Off the Pike · No. 1 · Adamstown

The woman
who painted
rabbits in
bowls

Route 272, north of the turnpike. A mile of buildings selling other people's lives, and one hand that keeps turning up in them.

Most of what is inside those buildings is the same thing repeated. Then every few months a stack of small paintings turns up. All signed the same way. All doing the same odd thing.

A rabbit, sitting up, inside a piece of good china. Blue willow. Sèvres. A green majolica heart. The rabbit is always calm, always slightly too large for the vessel, always painted with more care than the format asks for.

Blue willow, and a rabbit slightly too large for it.

3
Reclining White Rabbit. Oil on a Florentine gilt plaque, and the only one she painted lying down.
6
5
Nobody commissioned
any of these.
7
8

Somebody painted a rabbit in a bowl, then did it again, and again, for years, and framed each one in gilt as though it mattered.

It did, to her. That is the only provenance any of this ever really has.

The Room14

One Object

A lamp that was somebody's splurge

Hexagonal, hand-painted, cranes on blue panels, coral and brass at the base. You can tell what it cost by the panels: six of them, each painted separately, which is six chances to get it wrong. Nobody takes that risk for a lamp meant to disappear into a corner.

The Table

September, and
dinner moves
indoors

Summer eating is casual by design: plates carried outside, nothing that matters if it chips. Then the light goes at seven and the table starts asking for candles again.

Transferware, ironstone, a pair of brass ducks holding tapers that are by any reasonable standard ridiculous. They are also the best thing on the table.

None of it needs to match. The tables worth remembering never did.

Under Fifty

The shelf most of
the shop actually
lives on

Most of what comes through here costs less than a decent dinner out. That is not a compromise. It is what these objects are, and were: the shell somebody carried back from an ocean, the box the ring lived in, the mug with a face on it.

A Toby mug is fifteen dollars and two hundred years of the same joke, still working.
