Meet Pat McCarthy

She's never once been commissioned, and it shows.

If anything with an animal on it has come from us and it wasn't a print, there's a good chance her hand made it. Look in the corner and you'll usually find it, P. McCarthy, sometimes just initials, in the same unhurried script every time. Rabbits sitting in blue and white china. A fox curled into an oval Florentine board like the frame was built around him. A terrier keeping watch nobody asked him to keep.

We buy from her near Adamstown, and we've never once caught her between projects, there's always a new stack, always something we haven't seen a version of before. Nobody commissioned any of it. She just keeps painting animals, on whatever surface is in front of her, because that's apparently what the hours are for.

A print repeats a decision someone else already made. A painting like this is a decision happening again, animal after animal, for no one in particular. That's most of why we keep bringing her work home.

Her pieces currently in the shop are below, worth a slow look if you haven't seen them together. It's a rotating handful, because she keeps working, and so do we.

One to note

Bunny in Sèvres Blue Cachepot

Thirteen by eleven inches, oil, oval gilt frame. A white rabbit standing tall in a cachepot painted after old Sèvres porcelain, two bright ears the only thing breaking the blue. It's the largest of hers we've had, and the one we'd keep if we kept one.

Before you go

She keeps painting. We keep bringing them home.

Nothing here gets restocked, exactly, it gets replaced, by whatever she's finished next. If a piece above is already gone, or the next rabbit hasn't turned up yet, tell us what you're after and we'll write the moment it does.
