The Collection
Vermont keeps things.
Barns outlast the farms that built them. The general store keeps its counter, the schoolhouse keeps its chalkboard, and the good plates stay in the cupboard for company.
This autumn we gathered twenty-nine pieces, folk art and paintings among them, and arranged them in five chapters: the farm, the shore, the kitchen, the stable and the dining room. Each is one of one.

I · 1812 – 1845
The Farm
By 1830 Vermont was said to hold five sheep for every person. Then wool fell from 57 cents a pound to 25, and the hills turned to dairy.
What came after the sheep: a cow in the shallows, a village parade, a skillet on the kitchen wall.

The Shore
Vermont once had a coast. In 1849 a railroad crew near Charlotte dug up the bones of a beluga whale, now the state marine fossil.
The Champlain Sea drained and left a lake behind. Three pieces about the water, from a landlocked state, make more sense than they look.

The Kitchen
Electra Webb opened the Shelburne Museum in 1947 and filled it with what other people used up: decoys, hatboxes, quilts, toys.
A painted tray, a wall pocket for the matches, a chalkboard with the chalk still on it, a winter bridge worked in wool. Everyday things, kept.

One to note
Made to
fool a duck.
The Shelburne Museum keeps about 1,400 decoys and miniature carvings. This one is painted cream over red and worn to the wood in places, with the red still bright underneath. Twelve inches of carved wood for a mantel.
