Every good dresser had one box that wasn't for the everyday things, the one you opened slowly, that had its own particular creak, that held whatever mattered enough to keep separate.

This one's held that job a long time. Maybe earrings that only came out for something. Maybe a ring nobody wore but nobody could put anywhere else. Maybe just the small paper things, a note, a pressed flower, that don't have another proper place in a house.

It doesn't just hold what you put in it. It tells you that this, whatever it is, mattered enough to have its own box.
