Vintage Turkey Transferware Platter, Brown Fruit & Scroll Border

Every family has a platter that only leaves the cabinet once a year — carried out with two hands, set down in the middle of the table, and the whole room goes quiet for a second before anyone picks up the carving knife.

This one has done that work already. A turkey in a farmyard, tail fanned out, ringed in a scalloped border of apples, pears, and grapes. Maybe it sat in a breakfront the other three hundred and sixty-four days, waiting. Maybe it traveled with someone's mother, then someone's mother's mother. Maybe it's the platter that's made the same trip from the kitchen to the table for forty years running, and nobody remembers a Thanksgiving without it.

It doesn't just hold the bird. It's the signal that the whole day has arrived.
