Vintage Gump's of San Francisco Hand-Painted Porcelain Bowl, Rust Florals & Gilt Rim

There's a bowl in every family that showed up as a gift and never left. Nobody remembers who gave it. They just remember it was always there — on the sideboard, on the good table, doing nothing but being right.

This one came from Gump's, San Francisco, the store generations of Bay Area families went to when the gift needed the good box. Japanese porcelain, hand-painted in Hong Kong, made expressly for the store; it says so on the back, plain as a signature. Maybe it held nuts at Christmas. Maybe it sat empty for years and was never once asked to earn its place. Maybe it made it out of one house and into the next, and the one after that.

It doesn't just hold whatever gets put in it. It's the kind of object a house keeps out, not away.
