There's a table that only gets set once a year, when the flag comes out, the folding chairs go up on the lawn, and everybody brings something in a bowl they don't otherwise use.
This one has stood on that table before. A rust-red eagle, wings out, ringed in a circle of stars, banded in a border of stitched ovals top and bottom. Maybe it held potato salad, passed hand to hand down a picnic table. Maybe it sat on a sideboard the other three hundred and sixty-four days, waiting its turn. Maybe it was a wedding gift nobody used until the first Fourth of July in the new house.
