There's a particular hour in a courtyard like this when the tile roof holds the day's heat and everything slows down, the well gone quiet, the lanterns not yet lit, somebody's sandals left by the door.

This drawing has held that hour a long time. Maybe from a terrace where lunch ran three hours past when it should've ended. Maybe sketched by a guest who didn't want to forget the well, or the rooster on the bell tower, or the particular red of that roof. Maybe in a house where every room opened onto this same stone path.

It doesn't just show a courtyard. It holds the afternoon nobody wanted to end.
