Large Imari Charger with Green Landscape. Meiji Japan

A charger this size was never a dinner plate. It went up on the sideboard or the plate rail and stayed there, the one thing in the room a guest always ended up asking about.

The center is a landscape drawn almost entirely in green: mountains behind a temple roof, pines, a willow leaning into the water, one small figure alone in a boat. Red blossoms are laid over the top by hand. The rim breaks into scalloped panels of cobalt and iron red, flowering cherry, chrysanthemum, a bit of gilt still holding on in the blue reserves. Arita workshops made these for export by the thousand, and the enameling was still done by hand, which is why no two of them line up.

Each piece is vintage or antique and has lived a life before finding its way to Tallmadge Ave; natural signs of age, wear, patina, and imperfections are part of its character and are to be expected. All pieces are sold as-is, and any notable condition issues are described in the product listing. That said, if it arrives damaged or isn't as described, we'll refund you in full, including shipping — since each piece is one of a kind, we can't simply send a replacement.
