There's a particular kind of stillness at the edge of a field in late summer — the daylilies gone loose and heavy, something moving through the grass that stops the second you notice it.

This fox has been caught in that stillness a long time. Maybe crossing a meadow behind a house nobody locked the doors of. Maybe watched from a porch at the hour when the light turns gold and slow. Maybe painted by someone who stood very still, hoping it wouldn't run.
