A charming original oil painting by Pat McCarthy depicting a black-and-white Cavalier-type spaniel resting comfortably on a sun-warmed floor.
Painted with loose, expressive brushwork, the dog has an appealingly soulful presence, with McCarthy capturing its distinctive markings, floppy ears, and relaxed pose with wonderfully economical strokes. The muted sage-green background and warm terracotta tones give the little painting an understated, sophisticated palette.
The work is painted on antique Florentine board and retains the character of its age, including the beautifully worn, distressed surface of its elaborate oval gilt frame. The frame features scrolling foliate ornament, raised beading, and areas of exposed cream ground and aged gold, giving the piece the feel of a genuine collected antique rather than a newly manufactured reproduction.
Signed “P. McCarthy” in the lower right.
A wonderful small-scale work for a bar area, library, entryway, gallery wall, or collected apartment interior, particularly appealing to dog lovers and collectors of charming animal paintings.
