Antique American Oil Painting, Country Fair Crowd with Wagons and Flags, Late 1800s, Unframed, 26" x 17"

A crowd at a country fair, sometime in the late 1800s. A man stands up in a farm wagon and points out over the heads of the crowd while a boy climbs the side and another leans on the wheel. Red-roofed booths fly small American flags behind them, two ladies under a parasol look on, a covered buggy and horses wait at the left, and on the right a woman in a long blue dress holds a little girl in a white dress with a red sash by the hand. Everything sits under a big, heavy grey-green sky. Whether it is a stump speech, an auction or a horse trader's pitch, the painter doesn't say.

Antique American Oil Painting, American school, late 19th century, oil on canvas on its original wood stretcher. Unsigned. 26" x 17", unframed. It shows its age: heavy grime and darkening, craquelure and raised, flaking paint through the figures and booths, small paint losses, a few small holes and tears in the canvas, and water staining and tide marks on the back of the canvas. Sold as is. A conservator could do a lot here, or hang it as it is.
