About 350 people joined the first year. They saved twenty-eight dollars each.
The story
In December 1909, three men from a Carlisle shoe factory came to Merkel Landis, treasurer of the Carlisle Trust Company, and asked to open a savings account together. They wanted to pay into it a little at a time, all year, and take it out before Christmas.
Landis opened the account. The following week the bank announced a Christmas Savings Club to the whole town and advertised it in the local papers. Banks across the country copied it, and for most of the century a Christmas Club passbook lived in a kitchen drawer, filled in a few coins at a time.
It was a small, patient way of giving. The presents were chosen long before December, and paid for by the time they were wrapped. The pieces below follow the money through one club year, from the first deposit to Christmas morning.
