Vintage Pastoral Landscape Oil Painting, Black Frame

A cow has walked into the shallows and stopped. That's the whole event. Two more are down on the bank in the shade, and nothing in the picture is going to happen next.

Whoever painted it cared most about the sky. The clouds are worked up thick enough to catch the light off the surface, while the rest of it stays low and dark — the trees, the near bank, water the color of strong tea. Past the field there are two white cottages and a haystack, small, the way another family's evening looks from across a field.

An old landscape that has gone quiet with age, and reads better for it.
