A 7" x 9.5" original oil by Pat McCarthy, painted straight onto an oval Florentine giltwood plaque: a white rabbit sitting up in a blue willow bowl against a soft grey ground. The gold border, tooled rosettes, scrolls, a rope edge, isn't a frame around the painting, it's part of it. Italian Florentine gilt at its warm, worn best.

The plaque itself is the kind of gold-leaf object that hung in grandmothers' halls for decades. McCarthy painted a rabbit into the center and made an heirloom out of an heirloom. Small, jewel-like, and made to hang on its own where the light can find the gilding.
