Vintage Chinoiserie Crane Lamp, Hand-Painted Blue Panels, Coral & Brass

Somebody always left a lamp on. Not the overhead, not the whole house, one lamp, in the hall or on the table by the door, so the last person home didn't walk into the dark.

This one has done that work. Six panels, each painted by hand with cranes standing in the reeds, on a blue that's gone soft the way blue does. Maybe it sat in a front hall. Maybe on a chest at the end of a long room where nobody sat much. Maybe it was the light somebody read by until they fell asleep in the chair.

It doesn't just light a room. It tells you somebody was expected.
