Every barn had one by the door. You looped the lead through the ring while you got the latch, and it hung there through however many owners the place went through after.
The head is cast full round, ears up, muzzle down, with a loose iron ring swinging free below the chin. It sits on a backplate of oak leaves and acorns, cut open between the lobes so the wall shows through. The casting seam runs down the center of the face, the way sand-cast iron does, and the black has gone flat and chalky in the recesses. Two countersunk holes in the plate, ready to hang.
