Our guess is the flowers were Peter's to begin with, and his mother painted them so they wouldn't wilt. Somebody named Martha helped it find its way back to him.

On the front, the table tilts up, the doily is a flat white oval with blue dots, and the background is scrubbed in yellow-green. One tulip leans out of the vase the way real ones do by the third day. The paint is thin enough in places to show the canvas weave. The white frame is worn to bare oak at the corners, and the back is original, with both notes intact.

Oil on canvas (or board), unsigned on the front; inscribed and dated on the back

Image: 12" x 16"

Condition: [any notes].
